The study on the 2023 election, according to Ezekwesili, “surprisingly restored a measure of confidence in election monitoring around the world by not mincing words at all.”

In a statement sent on Tuesday via her verified Twitter profile, the former Minister argued that, unlike its report on Nigeria, Observer Mission Reports were becoming cookie-cutter, sacrificing electoral integrity.

“The European Union Election Observation Mission NIGERIA 2023 Final Report from @euinNigeria surprisingly restored a measure of confidence in election monitoring around the world.”

“Here’s how the @UN views election monitoring:

“Why should elections be observed?”

“Election observation is a valuable tool for improving election quality.” Observers contribute to public trust in the integrity of electoral processes.

“Observation can help to promote and protect the civil and political rights of election participants.” Even while an election is still taking place, it might lead to the correction of flaws or poor practices. It has the potential to deter or uncover manipulation and fraud.

“When observers can issue positive reports, it increases trust in the democratic process and strengthens the legitimacy of governments formed as a result of elections.”

“Election observation by domestic groups promotes civic participation in the political process.” Following elections, observation groups’ reports and recommendations can lead to changes and improvements in national legislation and practice.

“Those who follow global trends in election monitoring are aware that Observer Mission Reports were becoming cookie-cutter, sacrificing electoral credibility.”

“I wholeheartedly endorse the EU Report… It made no concessions to electoral credibility.

“It deviated from the global trend and reestablished trust in election observation.”
