According to the Presidency, the proper authorities are looking into a financial irregularity involving the transfer of N585.189 million by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu.
Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, stated that necessary action would be taken following the probe.
“The matter is being investigated.”
“Appropriate action will be taken thereafter,” he told the Daily Trust.
A total of N585.189 million, intended for disadvantaged people in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states, was allegedly transferred into a private account.
This sparked tremendous indignation and a call for Edu to be fired and prosecuted.
The minister directed the disbursement of N585.189 million into one Bridget Mojisola Oniyelu’s private account in a viral document signed by Edu and addressed to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
The money was deposited into Oniyelu’s account, according to the leaked document.
Despite significant indignation, Edu maintained in a statement issued by her Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Rasheed Zubair, that the payment was made in accordance with the law.
