President Bola Tinubu has written to the National Assembly requesting that the 2022 supplementary appropriation act be amended to allow the Federal Government to source N500 billion for palliative measures to mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal.
President Tinubu stated in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and read during plenary today, July 12, that the money will come from the N819. 5 billion additional Appropriation Act for 2022.
Part of the letter labeled “Request for Amendment to the 2022 Appropriation Act” reads:
“I am writing to request that the House of Representatives approve an amendment to the 2022 appropriation act in accordance with the law.”
The appeal has become required in order to raise funds to offer necessary palliatives to mitigate the impact of Nigeria’s recent elimination of fuel subsidies. The sum of N500 billion has been withdrawn from the 2022 appropriation act of N819.536 for the distribution of palliatives to Nigerians to mitigate the impact of the elimination of gasoline subsidies. I anticipate that the House will consider the request quickly.”
The Speaker stated that the House will discuss the President’s proposal in plenary on Thursday, July 13, and invited members to prepare to contribute.
