According to Ghanaian rapper and musician Desmond Kwesi Blackmore, often known as D-Black, the reason Nigerian artists are more successful than their Ghanaian counterparts is because Nigerians have a better understanding of business.

According to him, musicians in Nigeria are focused on making money, whereas their Ghanaian colleagues create music only out of a love for the craft.

During a recent episode of The Afrobeats Podcast, D-Black made the following statement: “The reason why Nigerian records are flying higher than Ghanaian ones is because Ghanaian artists don’t really care about the money.” They are uninterested in the company’s affairs. Simply put, it was the ardor for art that triumphed over all else. There is absolutely no commercial value in doing so.

“Despite receiving a nomination from BET and several honors, I did not make any money. But as soon as I made the transition to a more commercial sound, specifically Afrobeats, I went out and bought a Ferrari and a Range Rover. I appeared at every place.

“Music by itself is not sufficient, and musicians and other creative types need to realize this.” You have got to get up and get to work. It is imperative that you leverage social media platforms in order to publicize your work.
